Sigma Space Corporation announced
the appointment of Dr. Phil DeCola, as its Chief Science Officer. In his new position, Dr. DeCola will lead a new vertically integrated enterprise for the company. This enterprise will deploy Sigma's Earth observation instruments together with modeling and analysis tools to deliver environmental knowledge for public, private, and commercial resource management.
Before joining Sigma Space, Dr. DeCola served two administrations as Senior Policy Analyst in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and prior to that he served as Lead Scientist for Atmospheric Composition in the NASA Science Mission Directorate Earth Science Division.
"Dr. DeCola's appointment is an enabling event for our company. His expertise and reach will provide unique leadership for our new environmental data services program. This is a crucial moment for the future of our planet, and the ability of our company to produce scientific data of immediate use for environmental management decisions is quite humbling, challenging, and exciting. Phil is a true asset for our enterprise," said Dr. Marcos Sirota, president and CEO of Sigma Space.
"Resource management decisions and policy are best made on the firm bedrock of the latest and best scientific information. Our vision is to unlock the full potential of Earth observations to monitor, diagnose and project the state and changes of natural and human systems. We want to make this information accessible and useful, while ensuring that it is embedded in world class science," said Dr. Phil DeCola, Chief Science Officer of Sigma.
Dr DeCola's career in NASA focused on scientific applications of space-based remote-sensing of Earth's atmosphere, land, and oceans for advancing Earth system science and global change research. He was co-Chair of the U.S. Group on Earth Observations (USGEO) and led the USGEO assessment and planning of research and observational needs for quantifying environmental services and improving resource management. He has served as lead scientist for U.S. Government delegations to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has been the U.S. science focal point for IPCC since 2003, and has worked on the IPCC scientific assessments since 1994.
In addition to being a company Officer, Dr. DeCola will join Sigma Board of Directors. He joins Dr. Mary Cleave, General (retired) John Hall, Mr. Tom Bouchard, Dr. Marcos Sirota, and Mr. Joe Marzouk on Sigma's Board.
